>> Why should I do Family History?
In the future, your family roots may be forgotten in the sands of time. Over the years, many events have already destroyed so many family records. Your family is important – Preserve its history.
>> Where Do I Begin?
You can find a Genealogy Society in your town, or you can begin one. Your public Library may be able to assist you in this endeavor. Follow some of the links you will find here:
• Cindy’s List
• Family Search
• Find A Grave
• Ancestry
• My Heritage
• Geneanet
• Our Hendee Tree
>> How can I stay Informed About My Family History?
I think one of the best things anyone can do is to start a Group on Facebook for your own family. Then invite family and associated families to join. Make sure you give a good description of the group and set the preferences to “Private” to cut down on clutter.
>> How big can a Family Tree be?
There is NO parameter for the size of a family tree. If you find a person who is connected to others on your existing tree, and you have proper sources & citations documenting their connection, you get to add them. My tree is over 16,000 names. I’ve seen trees with many more names than that. Also, names and families can date back to whenever using the same criteria. In my tree I have a John Hende, father to Lord Mayor John Hendee of London, born 1275. Many family names can be traced back to the writing of the Doomsday Book .
>> What do I do when I have a question?
There are many genealogy boards you can join for FREE. Join them. These can be Blogs, Forums or just Family chat groups. Oh, you can always write me: paule@paulhendee.com
>> What will My Genealogy Cost?
Always a good Question! Genealogy can be free or anywhere in between. There are great websites like FamilySearch and Find-A-Grave that are FREE with registration. Other websites like Ancestry and My Heritage can cost hundreds of dollars. You could also hire a Certified Family Genealogist for many dollars. Websites like Geneanet offer a FREE version and a paid version (Try before you buy). I like going to my Public Library. It’s FREE. You may also get on one of their computers and ask to go to Ancestry where you will be able to explore all of Ancestry records and send what you find to your home email address.
>> Are there any applications I can get for my home computer, tablet or phone?
A couple of the best apps to look into are Heredis, Roots Magic, and Family Tree Maker. These work great on Mac, PC, tablets, and phones. If you like the Apple interface, you may want to look into MacFamily Tree for OS and iOS.
>> Can I just contact a genealogical society without joining their society for the purpose of research?
Yes! I have done this several times for my family. If you don’t know a particular society in an area you would like to research, you may wish to check the Directory of Genealogical Societies.
>> Are there any good interview techniques to use?
Yes! First, think about who to interview. I did a lot of interviews with my 104-year-old mother. Good to have firsthand information. She also had a lot of books, photos, and other artifacts for documentation. Even with my mother, I always use my personal Interview Form for support.
